A Wardrobe Dehumidifier

dehumiscent

Brief

To reduce and/or null the mustiness found in wardrobes during the monsoon.

The Problem Statement

In certain regions characterized by tropical monsoons, high humidity levels create dampness and foster mold in enclosed spaces such as wardrobes leading to clothes having an undesirable musty odor. This phenomena can be particularly observed with wardrobe and kitchen cabinets made with wood, MDF and other such organic materials.

Market Research

Studying existing technology in the market and use cases for each of them.

First…. a bit of research

While researching mold prevention alternatives, I was intrigued by the potential of essential oils.

Their natural scents not only deter mold growth but also offer a simple and effective DIY solution.

Out of the researched oils, clove oil is the best at dispersing early mold growth due to the natural presence of eugenol in it.

After desk research was completed, I conducted primary research through primarily three methods.

Surveys

Interviews

Experiments

Oh also, I got ahold of two existing dehumidifiers in order to dismantle them and understand their workings and conduct experiments with them.

Peltier Module Dehumidifier

So….what do we know from the research?

Product are too bulky

Analysis of current products from market research and dismantling

Unsustainable and damaging to the environment

Is not efficient for larger families

People are skeptical to having electrical outlets in their wardrobe

Free space is a rarity in most wardrobes

Recurring points in conducted interviews

Metal wardrobes are too ugly and unaesthetic

Redefined Brief

Create a compact device which fits into wardrobes that effectively reduces moisture and/or circulates air.

And now the fun part…. Ideation!!!!!!!!

Concept Generation

Chosen Concept

To ensure that the idea would work a mule prototype was made.

The chosen concept will focus on the diffusion of essential oils as its primary mechanism of action.

Oil Reservoir
This compartment will store the essential oil and function like an industrial hopper, gradually releasing it onto the terracotta plate.

Terracotta Plate
Terracotta's porous structure allows it to naturally diffuse essential oils, absorbing and slowly releasing their scent.

Fan
A low-speed fan could help disperse the essential oil scent throughout the wardrobe and improve air circulation.
